Workplace EV charger installation costs: what changes the quote?

There is no reliable one-price-fits-all figure for commercial charging. Hardware is only one part of the quote: cable routes, electrical capacity, civil works, software and the number of sockets can materially change the project.

The biggest cost factors

A useful comparison starts by giving every installer the same facts.

  • Number and power rating of sockets
  • Distance from the distribution board to parking bays
  • Trenching, surfacing, bollards and bay markings
  • Available electrical capacity and any supply upgrade
  • Load management and future expansion
  • Back-office billing, access control and maintenance

Why the cheapest hardware may not mean the cheapest project

A low unit price can be outweighed by complex cabling, groundworks or a design that cannot scale. Ask installers to separate hardware, electrical works, civils, software, maintenance and VAT so quotations are easier to compare.

How the grant affects the price

For eligible projects completed from 1 April 2026, the Workplace Charging Scheme can cover up to 75% of eligible purchase and installation costs, subject to a £500-per-socket cap. It does not necessarily cover every project or ongoing cost.

What to include in your quote request

Include the site postcode, parking arrangement, desired socket count, expected users, likely daily mileage, known electrical supply, preferred completion date and current grant status. Photos or plans can follow after an installer confirms interest.
